Literature

The German artist creates sculptures and paintings that transport viewers into dreamlike encounters with dwarfs or strange characters with extra-large ties.
Thos are some of the typical figures that populate von Criegerns pictorial inventions. Giving his figures names like superheros, “mirror-man“ or „sculpture-king“, von Criegern plays with those figures as if they were part of a stage play. They appear in many drawings, paintings and sculptures and develop a life of their own. The stage sets for these scenes are interiors that are influenced by the strict perspective of Renaissance masterpieces, but what we see in those settings reminds of the commedia dellárte.

Paintings like „Playing with money“ are changing the daily life into absurd scenery. Bankers have stripped off their business-like behaviour and play with money like children with their toys.

Friedrich Marc von Criegern is a storyteller. He develops a completely personal world governed by its own laws. But his narrative approach is combined with a clear and pure style. The paintings are characterized by a strong emphasis on contour. Black ink drawings are set against a brilliant yellow ground.
These paintings are a great example of the artists imaginative fusion of surrealist fantasy with the rigors of Purism.
